Adult High Fidelity Simulation Room

Rooms: 2.214, 2.216, 2.226, 2.228, 2.232, 2.234

Room Description: This private hospital room has a high fidelity adult manikin simulator that can talk, bleed, blink, cry, and respond physiologically like a real human. The simulators are run from our control room where facilitators respond as the patient in real time through the manikin.

The room is a real hospital room with all the equipment that one would find in the clinical setting, including a hospital bed, oxygen, suction, call lights, intravenous poles and other equipment.  These rooms are used to immerse small groups of students in realistic clinical situations in which they can develop and practice their assessment and critical thinking skills while administering care for the patient.  Interprofessional education is a significant component of our curriculum and gives students and professionals from schools across UTMB the opportunity to work together while learning from the University’s diverse disciplines.

Each room is equipped with audio and video technology that records each session to facilitate hosted interactive debrief sessions or to evaluate performance.

Laptop computers with electronic charting capabilities give students the opportunity to perform medical charting in a simulated environment that is very similar to the real thing, increasing the richness of the simulation experience.

Equipment used:SimMan 3G high fidelity manikin, clinical equipment (Intravenous pumps, oxygen flow meters, suction, and hospital beds), and working call lights.

Video recording technology records the simulated scenarios and can be used to evaluate student performance and to facilitate an interactive debriefing session.

Rooms also feature Computers with Electronic Charting capabilities.

Group size: 4-6 students

Skill practiced: Critical thinking, clinical decision making, teamwork, interprofessional team training, assessment, psychomotor skills, communication, and behavioral skills.

Participating classes: Nursing students: Adult 1, Adult 2, Adult 3, Informatics, and Capstone.  Other schools:  Medical Students, Physician Assistant Students, Occupational Therapy Students, and new resident nurses from the Health System.

The wall units contain oxygen, suction, ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes, and other standard hospital equipment.

There are six laptop computers that can be used to review skills related content, call up or review policies or procedures, or for electronic medical record charting.

Equipment used: Hospital beds, oxygen flow meters, automatic blood pressure machines, suction regulators, electronic charting, mid-fidelity adult and child manikins.

Group size: up to 30 students

Skill practiced: Assessment techniques, vital signs, tracheostomy suctioning, central line dressing change, foley catheter insertion, and electronic charting.

Participating classes:  Nursing Students:  Adult I, Adult II, Adult III, Capstone, Child and family, Advanced Health Assessment, and Neonatal Nurse practitioner concepts. Other schools:  Medical students, Physician Assistant students, Occupational Therapy student, Physical Therapy students. Workshops: Trauma Nursing Core Courses (TNCC) and Intubation workshop.

Adult Intravenous Therapy and Skills

Rm 2.212

Room Description: This room has Adult and Pediatric Intravenous arm task trainers that provide hands on practice with Intravenous skills (IV) including IV start and blood draw.  Injection pads are used to teach the different types of injections.  Four gaming computers with virtual IV software are used to provide another level of practice to improve success with these important skills.

Equipment used: Injection pads, Arms with blood for task training of skills, and gaming computers with virtual IV software

Group size: up to 16 students

Skill practiced: Intravenous catheter insertion, administering an intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular injection.

Participating classes: Nursing Students:  Adult I, Adult II, Adult III, Capstone, Child and family, Advanced Health Assessment, and Neonatal Nurse practitioner concepts. Other schools:  Medical students, Physician Assistant students, Occupational Therapy student, Physical Therapy students.

Large Debriefing and Skills Room

Rm 2.224

Room Description:This room is equipped with a large flat screen television that is used to debrief simulated activities.  With this equipment, specific videos can be played during facilitated discussion to assist with meeting student objectives. Debriefing gives learners the opportunity to reflect on and interpret performance that occurred during their simulated clinical experience.

Power point capabilities are used to reinforce skills and to review case studies related to the skills activity.

Additionally, a small area of this room can be used to support overflow from the Adult Acute Care Laboratory (2.230) and can be used for mid fidelity manikin use.

Equipment used: Large flat screen television, video capture playback capabilities, power point capabilities, hospital beds, oxygen flow meters, automatic blood pressure machines, suction regulators, electronic charting, mid-fidelity adult and child manikins.

Group size: Up to 30 students

Skill practiced: Assessment techniques, vital signs, tracheostomy suctioning, central line dressing change, foley catheter insertion, reflection, critical thinking, and electronic charting.

Participating classes: Nursing Students:  Adult I, Adult II, Adult III, Capstone, Child and family, Advanced Health Assessment, and Neonatal Nurse practitioner concepts. Other schools:  Medical students, Physician Assistant students, Occupational Therapy student, Physical Therapy students. Workshops: Trauma Nursing Core Courses (TNCC) and Intubation workshop.

Adult Simulation Control Room

Rm 2.252

Room Description: From the control room, the facilitator manages and directs the physiological setting and cued responses of the high fidelity adult manikins.  These highly sophisticated training aids feature microphones and incorporated speakers that allow control of the patient response and feedback. The facilitator’s voice is projected from the patient simulator in real time adding to the realism and patient-caregiver interaction.

A video capture system is used for the faculty and facilitators to observe the simulation in progress and transfer captured audio and video into play back mode with full control, for evaluation, assessment, and/or debrief playback.

Nursing Station

Lobby Area

Area Description: The nurse’s station functions exactly like a nurse’s station in a real hospital.  A call light system is located here and patient room call bells can be answered.  Faculty who are facilitating are located at the nurses station and provide support to students needing assistance in calling or communicating with different areas in the health care setting.  Students practice communicating using the situation, background, assessment and recommendation (SBAR) format.
