Overview

Cheryl began her nursing career in 1972 at St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston, Texas as a clinical nurse on the Women's Unit that cared for L&D, Nursery, Ante-Post Partum and Gyn patients. Cheryl then began nursing at UTMB in 1977 as a Head Nurse in an outpatient clinic. In 1978, she was recruited to assume a Training Specialist III position for nursing at an institution level. Cheryl was recognized for her leadership capabilities and compassion/passion for nursing and was chosen for a Supervisor position in the OB/GYN and Neonatology department from 1980-1987. She became the Assistant Director, then the Director of Nursing for the Women's, Infants' and Children's (WIC) department in 1987-1998. As the DON for the WIC department, Cheryl assumed an active role as a Clinical Adjunct Faculty for the UTMB School of Nursing and provided on-site clinical supervision for numerous student clinical and leadership groups at UTMB and other institutions. Because Cheryl had a passion for education and students, she joined the UTMB School of Nursing in 1998 as an Assistant Professor and taught in the OB/GYN/NEO and leadership track. She was recruited in 1999 to apply for the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the UTMB School of Nursing. Students were important to her and she enthusiastically taught them about the love of nursing as a career! Cheryl returned to the leadership role in the WIC department, continued to teach and assume an adjunct faculty role over the remaining 12 years. At the time of her retirement in March 2012, Cheryl was the Assistant Chief Nurse and Director of Patient Care for the Women's, Infants' & Children Services. Cheryl Day re-joined the UTMB SON as an Assistant Professor in August 2014 and now teaches in the BSN nursing program.
